Agreements let you upload a PDF (such as a non-disclosure agreement or terms document) that participants must review and accept before they can begin your study. This feature is designed for enterprise teams who need participants to formally agree to specific terms before sharing sensitive information or designs.
Note: Agreements are only available on the Enterprise plan. If you're not yet on an enterprise plan, book a demo with our sales team to upgrade.
What are agreements?
Agreements allow you to upload a document that participants must agree to before starting your study. This might be an NDA, terms of use, or any other document you need them to accept. Participants can view, scroll through, and download the document before confirming agreement.
Once they agree, they’ll be able to continue with your study as normal. If they do not agree, they will not be able to participate.
How agreements work in a study
When enabled, the agreement step appears after the screener (if applicable) and before the test begins. Participants must confirm they’ve read and agreed to the document to proceed.
For unmoderated tests:
If your study includes a screener, participants must first pass the screener before seeing the agreement.
If there’s no screener, the agreement appears immediately after clicking the test link.
For moderated interviews:
Agreements appear after the screener and before participants can book a time.
The booking screen is locked until participants confirm their agreement.
Participants can:
Scroll through the document in-browser.
Download a copy of the PDF for their records.
Check a confirmation box to indicate agreement (this enables the "Continue" button).
Agreements are displayed in a modal, similar to screeners.
Setting up an agreement for an unmoderated study
To enable an agreement:
Create or open a study in the test builder.
Toggle on the Agreement feature.
Upload a PDF file by dragging and dropping a document or browsing your files.
Save and continue editing your study as normal.
Once uploaded, you’ll see a preview of the first page and options to download or remove the file if needed. The agreement carries over if you duplicate the test.
Tip: Agreements also appear when previewing the study, so you can test the participant experience before launch.
Setting up an agreement for an interview
To add an agreement to an interview:
Create or open an interview study.
In the Screener and agreement section, toggle on the Agreement feature.
Upload your PDF file by dragging and dropping or browsing your files.
Once uploaded, the agreement becomes active immediately.
Participants will be required to agree to the document before reaching the booking screen. We record their full name, date, and the version of the document they accepted, even if they abandon the process before scheduling.
Common questions
What happens if a participant doesn’t agree to the NDA?
They won’t be able to proceed with the study. If you're using a screener in an unmoderated study, this will count as an abandon rather than a screen-out, so it won't affect the study's screen-in rate.
Can I use agreements with my own participants or just Lyssna’s panel?
You can use agreements with both. The experience is the same for participants whether you recruit from your own network or from the Lyssna research panel.
How do I know if someone has agreed to the NDA?
In your study's results, you’ll see a timestamp and the document name in the participant drawer for each person who agreed. This information is recorded and visible alongside other participant details in your study results.
Participants must agree to continue with the study. If they have completed your test, you can be confident they have agreed to your document.
What data is tracked when someone agrees to an NDA?
We track the version of the document, the date and time of agreement, and either the participant’s name (for panelists and interview participants) or an anonymized ID (for link-recruited participants). This information appears in the participant drawer of your study results and is also stored securely in our database until the study is deleted.
Do participants receive a copy of the agreement?
They aren’t automatically sent a copy, but they can download the document directly from the agreement modal before accepting it.
What happens if my plan changes?
If you switch to a non-Enterprise plan, you won’t be able to recruit for studies that use agreements. However, you’ll still be able to view existing data from those studies.
