A matrix question is a type of closed-ended question that asks respondents to evaluate one or more rows of items using the same rating scale in a compact grid format. They consolidate related questions into a single interaction to make your survey faster to complete while producing cleaner, more comparable data.
Matrix questions are often used to gather structured feedback on a number of related items. This can include evaluating levels of agreement, satisfaction, or emotional responses to multiple statements, customer journey touchpoints, ideas, or concepts. The grid format allows for quicker data analysis as you can easily compare your respondents' answers to all items in one chart.
Creating a matrix question
You can add a matrix question as part of a dedicated Survey question section or include it as a follow-up question after any task that allows.
From the left side of your dashboard, click Create study, and then Test or survey. Or, you can edit an existing test you've already been working on.
Add a Survey question section, or any other section that includes follow up questions, if you want participants to complete another task first.
Select “Matrix question” from the dropdown menu as your question type.
Your question should be one that encompasses or ties together all of the items that you're evaluating (e.g. How satisfied or dissatisfied were you with each of the following?")
On the left, under Rows, add the items that you want participants to rate.
On the right, under Columns, add the scale of values from which you want participants to choose when rating the items under Rows.
Participants will only be able to select one option per row by default. If you want them to be able to select multiple, you can enable it by ticking the box that says "Allow multiple selections per row."
Viewing your matrix question results
By default, your results will appear in the same matrix format that was shown to participants. In the chart, you'll see the absolute number of participants who chose a specific rating for each row item. The more popular answers will be displayed in a darker shade of blue. If there is a blank space where a row and column meet, that means that nobody selected that rating for that item.
Another way to view your results is by clicking "Horizontal chart" which displays the same results horizontally and allows you to filter by each selection to dig deeper into those participants' responses on other questions or tasks in your test.
