Navigation test sections help you analyze how people navigate through your website or application using a series of images to emulate an interaction flow.

When taking navigation sections, participants are asked to complete a task and are presented with your images. At each step, the participant's click position and timing are recorded. The result is a funnel report showing how many users successfully clicked in the correct place at each step, where people dropped off, and direct explanations from every user who clicked somewhere unexpected.

Navigation tests are great for wireframes, app onboarding campaigns, and checkout flows, to name a few.

Creating a Navigation test

  1. From your dashboard, click +Create study, and then Test or survey

  2. Add a Navigation test section. You can rename this section to help keep large tests organized if desired.

  3. Upload two or more images.

  4. Set instructions for participants, asking them to carry out a particular task.

  5. Define where users must click (hitzones) on each step to proceed.

Images can be dragged and dropped into the correct order after uploading.

You can then optionally add follow-up questions for participants to answer after they have completed your task. These questions are shown in order by default, or you can enable the option just below them to randomize the order they're shown to your participants.

Navigation test results

Results show you how many participants completed the flow, where they clicked, where they dropped out, and how long they took.

To show this information we use heat maps, click clusters, success and failure rates, and duration.

Any clicks made within a hitzone will be considered successful clicks and will be colored green. Any clicks outside of a hitzone will be considered mis-clicks which will be coloured red.

If you used a Linear scale or Ranking question as a follow-up, you will see the mean of the responses in the bottom right corner of the section, rounded to two decimal places.

Common questions

What type of file can you upload?

The file must be a JPEG, PNG, or GIF and no larger than 5MB.

How are images displayed to participants?

You can control the way your design will be displayed:

  • Unmodified images are shown at native height and width

  • HiDPI images are shown at half native height and width

  • Framed images are shown within a device of your choice

How many images can you include in your Navigation Test?

You can upload up to 12 images per section, but you can add as many navigation test sections as you like.

Can I create different branches in the navigation flow?

Not at the moment. Each navigation test represents a single, linear navigation flow. If you want to test a task on a full prototype, you can find out how to do that here: Prototype test sections.
