The Respond by Lyssna app lets you complete research studies and record your screen directly from your phone. If someone has sent you a study link that requires screen recording on mobile, you'll need the app to participate.
You don't need a Lyssna account. Just download the app and follow the link you were sent.
Download the app from the App Store or Google Play.
Joining a study
Before you start, we recommend turning on Do Not Disturb on your phone. Incoming calls, texts, and notifications can interrupt the study and may be captured in your recording.
Using the direct link or QR code
When you receive an invite to participate in a study:
Tap the study link on your phone to open the Respond by Lyssna app. If you received the link on a desktop, you can scan the included QR code with your mobile to quickly launch the study on that device instead.
If you don't have the app installed, you'll be taken to the App Store or Google Play to download it first. Once installed, tap the link again to be taken straight into the study.
Grant the permissions requested when prompted. Depending on the study, this may include screen recording, microphone, and camera access. You must accept these to proceed with the study.
Complete the study as instructed. The app records your actions in the background.
Your recording uploads automatically when the study ends.
Using the study code
If the study doesn't open in the app automatically after using the link or the QR code, you can still participate using the 6-character study code shown below the QR code.
Open the Respond by Lyssna app, enter the code on the home screen, and tap Start study.
What gets recorded
The recording requirements for each study are shown clearly before you begin. Depending on the study, you may be asked to share:
Your screen: everything visible on your phone as you complete the tasks
Your camera: a picture-in-picture view of your face
Your audio: your voice as you think aloud
Some websites or prototypes you're asked to test may prompt you to grant them microphone or camera access. Please decline these requests. Granting access to a website can interfere with the app's recording and may cause your study to end unexpectedly.
Screen recording permission is required for studies that include it. If you deny or revoke permission during a study, the session will end, and your response won't be submitted.
Privacy
Your recordings are only shared with the person or company that sent you the study. Lyssna does not share your recordings with any third parties. View our privacy policy.
Common questions
Do I need to create an account to use the app?
No, you do not need to create an account. You can download the Respond by Lyssna app and complete a study without registering or logging in.
What if I don't have the app installed?
If you don't have the app installed, opening the study link will take you to the App Store or Google Play. Download the Respond by Lyssna app, then open the link again to be taken straight into the study.
What happens if my session ends early?
If your session ends early (for example, because screen recording permission was denied), your response won't be submitted. If you think this happened by mistake, reach out to the person who sent you the study link.
A website is asking for microphone or camera access. What should I do?
Please decline. Some websites and prototypes ask for microphone or camera access during testing, but granting it can interfere with the app's own recording. Declining won't affect your ability to complete the study.
